Rousseau’s Political Concept of happiness, between Ancien Régime and Revolution

(Working title)

Victor Ausländer

The project aims at a philosophical study of the idea of happiness (bonheur) in Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as a moral and individual phenomenon, but also, and especially, as a political and collective one. This includes, one the one hand, an examination of the rupture that the promotion of such a value involves, regarding the context it comes from and from which it emerges (Ancien Régime culture). On the other hand, we will look at its extensions amongst the plebeian fringe of the Revolution.
